SMART on FHIR

A standard for launching third-party applications inside an EHR using OAuth2 authorization and FHIR data access.

SMART (Substitutable Medical Applications, Reusable Technologies) on FHIR combines OAuth2-based authorization with FHIR APIs. It defines an app launch flow where the EHR passes a launch context (patient, encounter) to the app. The app authenticates through the EHR authorization server and receives a scoped access token. This enables a marketplace of EHR-embedded apps without custom integration per vendor.
