ORM

Order Message — an HL7v2 message type used to place, update, or cancel clinical orders such as lab tests, medications, and imaging.

ORM^O01 messages carry order details from the EHR to the fulfilling system (lab, pharmacy, radiology). Each order includes an ORC (common order) segment and one or more OBR (observation request) segments. The newer OML message type is gradually replacing ORM in some workflows, but ORM remains dominant in installed bases.

FAQ

What is the difference between ORM and OML?
ORM (Order Message) is the older format. OML (Order Message Lab) is a newer, lab-specific order message. Both carry order details, but OML has tighter structure for laboratory workflows.
