ORU

Observation Result Unsolicited — an HL7v2 message type that carries lab results, vitals, and other clinical observations.

ORU^R01 is the most common results message. It carries structured observations in OBX segments, each with a code (usually LOINC), a value, units, and a reference range. A single ORU can contain dozens of OBX segments for a panel like a CBC or metabolic panel. ORU messages flow from lab information systems to EHRs, clinical data warehouses, and downstream analytics.
